Alli Arocho’s work represents her conscious effort to remain authentically boricua after moving to the USA, and an attempt
to reconnect with her Puerto Rican heritage in the context
of the diaspora that she embodies.
Vejigantes are folkloric characters from Puerto Rico that represent the resilience of African cultures threatened by colonization and slavery. The masks were fashioned in colors and styles guided by those unique cultures as a subtle form of resistance to assimilation.
